"Lost Underwater" was launched in 2020 as an artistic research that tries to tell some of the forgotten stories of the sunken villages left underwater. Villages that were displaced due to the intensive construction of reservoirs in Bulgaria in the period 1950-1986.
Drawing on archival footage, interviews and field research, we experiment with the collected materials. The approach is again multi-layered - textile collages, video and soundscapes come together to create an atmosphere where visitors can immerse themselves in the forgotten past and history of these places.
The exhibition and the whole project are dedicated to all the people who were forced to leave and destroy their houses, abandon the land they cultivate and settle in a new place.
The project was realized with the financial support of the National Fund "Culture", program "Debuts", in partnership with the Bulgarian National Film Archive.
